More Than Just a Festival

How the

Highland Gathering

Changes Lives in Amanzimtoti

Every year, the sound of bagpipes and the rhythmic beat of drums fill the air as thousands of people gather for one of the biggest Scottish festivals in the Southern Hemisphere. But beyond the kilts, craft markets, and Highland games, the Highland Gathering is something even more special—an event that directly uplifts the community.

From its humble beginnings as a school fundraiser in 1964, the Gathering has grown into a massive celebration of culture, heritage, and community spirit, all while serving a greater purpose. Hosted by the Toti Lions Club, the event raises funds that go right back into the local community, supporting charity initiatives, small businesses, and local tourism.

So, how does this incredible event impact Amanzimtoti, and why should you get involved? Let’s take a closer look.

A Tradition That Started with Giving Back

The very first South Coast Highland Gathering wasn’t planned as a festival—it was a fundraiser. Umbogintwini Primary School needed money to build a swimming pool, and Betty and Clifford Leesam stepped in to organise the event. Little did they know that their small initiative would spark a 60-year tradition that continues to benefit the town to this day.

Over the years, the event moved from Umbogintwini Primary to Kingsway High School, before eventually being taken over by the Toti Lions Club. Today, it remains one of their biggest fundraisers of the year, helping them carry out critical outreach projects in the community.

From funding food parcels and eyecare projects to supporting youth development and medical needs, the Gathering ensures that the Amanzimtoti community thrives.

A Festival That Brings Business to Toti

The Highland Gathering doesn’t just support charities—it also brings a major economic boost to local businesses.

Every year, around 8,000 visitors from across KwaZulu-Natal and beyond travel to Amanzimtoti for the event. That means:

  • 🏨 Guesthouses and B&Bs get fully booked.
  • 🍽️ Restaurants and cafés see a surge in customers.
  • 🚗 Local shops and services benefit from increased foot traffic.
  • 💼 Tourism and hospitality industries get a much-needed boost.

For many businesses in the area, the Gathering is a highlight of their year—a day when the whole town comes alive with energy, excitement, and economic activity.

And it’s not just the local businesses that thrive—over 250 small business owners set up market stalls at the event, selling everything from handcrafted goods to delicious homemade treats. For many vendors, the Highland Gathering is an opportunity to:

  • Introduce their business to thousands of new customers.
  • Boost their sales in a single day.
  • Network with other entrepreneurs and potential clients.

If you’re a small business owner, this is an event you don’t want to miss!
